Coming Up: 20th Sep - Photoshop/Lightroom

Coming up this week is a hands on demonstration on Photoshop and Lightroom, discussing basic skills and giving advice on improving your photos.

We will be covering the basics - exposure, levels, curves, saturation, sharpening, resizing and much more. Images that will be used on the evening will be supplied to members during the week. If youwant to follow step-by-step during the demonstration don't forget to bring your laptop along. We will also touch on the importance of screen calibration and the use of the Club's very own ColorMunki!

By the end of the evening you should be able to go off and practice on your own photos for the following week, which is Round 1 (OPEN) of our NIPA competition!

We actively encourage all members, old and new, to enter into these rounds and receive feedback from our experienced judges. The judges will offer constructive advice in such a way that will only help to improve your photography time and time again. If you are not comfortable with submitting a print, then why not enter a DPI (Digital Projected Image)? Instructions will be given on how to do this on Thursday.

We look forward to see everyone on Thursday!

13th Sep - Basics & Distinctions

Last night was the first proper session of the this season and we kicked things off with a packed session.

Basics

Karen McCrea gave a great presentation on the basics of photography.  For those that are still struggling with the juggling act you might find this cheatsheet useful, it's a handy resource for your camera bag and was found here.

Distinctions

Donal McCann  FRPS then gave a fascinating talk on distinction panels, specifically RPS and IPF distinctions.  We were treated to a selection of club members who displayed and discussed their distinction panels;

  • L Panels: Helen Weir   LRPS & Melissa Gordon  LIPF
  • A Panel: Brian Bennett  ARPS

Finally Ross McKelvey  ARPS DPAGB BPE2 discussed PAGB and FIAP distinction routes.

Information

Here is a handout detailing RPS assessment dates throughout 2012/2013.

Housekeeping

The Committee would like to extend its thanks to everyone that helped to setup and clear away the room.  As you can see, with such a large turnout that help is invaluable in ensuring that we kick off and finish in good time.  There'll be plenty to do throughout the year and we'd ask that people pitch in as and when they can.  Thank you.

Coming Up: 13th Sep - Basics & Distinctions

Coming up on this Thursday's session we have a fantastic double header for our club members.

Beginners Liaison Officer, Karen McCrea will be covering the basics of photography.

Distinctions Officer, Donal McCann (and very special guests) will be providing information on the different routes for distinctions a photographer can explore.

It's going to be a packed night, but bring your cameras as we might get a chance to play with them.

Full House

It was standing room only for the first night of the season.

It was great to see so many new faces tonight, and you can see that Barry has everyone enthralled :)

Now, if only I'd brougt something better than my iphone with me :)

Here's to a fun 12/13 BPIC season!

Ross Passes The (Great) Barr

We've just heard that Ross McKelvey enjoyed fantastic success at the Great Barr Open Exhibition.

The Great Barr Open Exhibition is one of the (approx 16) Annual Exhibitions organised by 'British Photographic Exhibitions' or 'BPE' as it is known.

He placed 1st (PAGB Gold) and 2nd (PAGB Silver) in the mono prints category for the prints The Boxer and Stephen respectively.  He also secured 5 individvual Judges' Awards for other prints.  All in all, quite a haul from a single exhibition.

Ross has only been entering BPE Exhibitions since January and has now achieved the BPE2 Crown Award which requires at least 50 accepted prints in the various BPE Exhibitions.   (BPE5 Crown Award is the highest Crown award and needs 300 acceptances!)

Below is a selection of the winning images, including the 1st and  2nd place mono prints.

Newtownabbey Man Finds Gold In NIEA Photo Challenge

Stephen Barnes from Newtownabbey, winner of the "NIEA Torch Relay Digital Challenge”, is presented with first prize, a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, by Carrickfergus Castle Manager Janis Smith and DOE Marketing and Design Communications Manager Richard Collett.

The competition challenged members of the public to take memorable photographs that featured NIEA sites and properties on or close by the NI Olympic Torch Relay Route, and then post them on NIEA’s Facebook page.

Stephen’s winning picture depicted the coming together of two iconic images as the Olympic Torch passed by Carrickfergus Castle in June.

Congratulations Stephen!
